Every great story needs a world that feels both familiar and wonderfully strange. Today, on offer is a glimpse into the setting of our upcoming two-volume series.
A Realm Just Beyond Our Own
The world of Letters of Misunderstood Magic exists in the shadows and spaces between our everyday reality—a realm where five sisters of the ancient Wardenguard lineage practice their distinctive crafts across modern America. From Nyla's secluded canyon in Sedona's red rocks to Margaret's windswept mountain sanctuary in Colorado, from Ione's carefully guarded cryptid research facility to Ivy's forest-enshrouded hearth of domestic enchantment, these practitioners navigate a world where power courses through bloodlines like hidden rivers. Here, entities from beyond occasionally pierce the veil of our world, and the mundane and miraculous perform an intricate, eternal dance of balance.
What makes this world special isn't just its hidden magical enclaves, but how it transforms the characters who inhabit it. Each sister has carved out her own relationship with magic, developing specialties that reflect their personalities and life experiences. Some embrace their heritage fully, while others maintain a cautious distance, creating tension that drives much of the narrative.
One of our favorite aspects is how magical power in this world manifests through enhanced senses rather than showy displays. This seemingly small detail becomes increasingly significant as the story unfolds in Volume 1, where the sisters must learn to trust their unique perceptions to understand a mystery that has been unfolding for generations.

Nyla manages miniature donkeys, Thessaly writes books on tea alchemy, Ione studies cryptid behavior, Ivy balances domestic bread baking and craft shows, and Margaret works in a souvenir shop with a magical apothecary section.
This intersection of the magical and mundane creates moments of both humor and poignancy. When ancient power meets modern life, the resulting friction generates the sparks that ignite our narrative.
