Fragrance Oil Talk

Fragrance Oil Talk

Let's talk about fragrance oils. Sugared Strawberry Fragrance Oil

For many soap makers scenting soap is a the holy grail. Along the way toward that holy grail, there are lots of tricky business.

Knowing what appeals to one soap maker can help you make a decision. For example, she likes forest scents. I like her type of forest scents. I can trust I might like what she likes, in general. My guy and I like similar scents so when he tells me he loves something, and I didn't like it at first, I reconsider.

There are so many companies that sell fragrance oils for soap making.  Nurture Soap Supply, Nature's Garden, Candle Science, Fillmore Container (True Scents), Aztec International, Wholesale Supplies Plus, just to name a few.

I've learned a few things about fragrance oils.

The scent I experience right out of the bottle doesn't lie, but can be reconsidered. I need to be present to my attraction or repulsion. Being aware of this response doesn't have to stop me from using the fragrance oil, but being aware is helpful.

Offensive To My Olfactory

When  fragrance oil accelerates or discolors it doesn't immediately take it off my roster. I need to take more care with it, treat it more gently and incorporate the behaviors of that particular fragrance oil in the design. That is if I want to enjoy it. I remember most of those that move fast or discolor, but my notes are vitally important.

Many of my pies have gone in the trash because I've tried fruit scents that I found nose-offensive out of the bottle. Mistake! These were overwhelming and potent as they cured. That doesn't mean you won't like them, but I do not. I honor that about me. If I were to offer something I can't stomach in my world, how could I stock it? I'd be distressed, which is not a creative position I enjoy.

I can't get behind the entire soap and say, "yeah, this is awesome." I want to create something extraordinary, something you can't live without, at least try once to expand your scent repertoire.

What do you want your soap to smell like? The ocean in winter? Meadow flowers in spring? The scent of fresh hay, leather and the hint of barn wood? How about fresh cut grass the first day of summer vacation?

I look for scents that are either so unique they create new memories, or sincere scents that drum up old pleasant memories. Right behind this desire to create something that makes a series of images in your mind I want you to get present to that moment - ground in that very moment of your present state while experiencing your soap. Yes, all that I ask from my fragrance oils and Sorcery blends.

The last two companies, I used a lot of them, couldn't like any but those listed, and love them. I can't live without them.

This is my cultivated list. All those that have a "Y" means yes I would or have purchased again. Those I have listed are ones I happen to have, like, but not enough to buy again for the some or all of the following reasons:

  1. I haven't used it yet.
  2. It was too much trouble and not worth the fickleness.
  3. "No" answer means I might buy it again, but not soon.
  4. Those I have a big "Yes" means I love it so much I will use it for-EVER!

Please read the reviews about each of the fragrance oils. I have included only those I remember that discolored strongly. This is not a comprehensive list, but I felt it was redundant at this time to list my entire stock. I will, in the future offer a comprehensive list. These are the ones that stand out.

I received my first order from you and absolutely love all the fragrances in the soaps. I was wondering (PRETTY PLEASE) the one I received was a coconut lime (from the soap box collection). I want to buy this fragrance so badly because I absolutely ADORE it. Was it from Candle Science? I want to make lotions and body sprays. I can’t find a coconut I like and your soap smells amazing, it’s not very strong but I’m sure in other products it may stand out more. Still love it all! I hate to ask. I just wanted to make sure. I was also wondering if you plan to update this list. I have about 6 bars and only 2 FO’s (I believe) are listed here. Thank you for all you do. You definitely put a spell on me! Now to order soap dough and your books!

Thank you, Bee, this was very helpful!

I like all the scents you listed as YES, and I have never received a soap from you that did not have an enchanting scent. So, you are definitely on to something. I think in the past, I ruled out too many scents from an OOB sniff. Even if I used it to make soap, I think my brain memorized what I didn’t like about the scent, and searched for that offensive scent in the cured soap. Of course, if I tried I could find it. One of your soap samples changed my mind. Without checking the scent name, I sniffed it and was delighted. When I looked at the scent description, I thought, “no way.” I realized then that I just can’t do a straight OOB sniff. I have to just open the bottle and let the scent waft out slowly, a few feet across the room. Suddenly I was enjoying more scents like fresh grassy scents and barnwood. Thanks a bunch for sharing your scents!
