In order to see differently, move in to a new artistic endeavor, we need to change our perceptions.
We are not only changing our perceptions of molding soap (if you are a soap molder and/or follower of molded soap then you know how much change is required) but of our world.
Changing our perceptions of our world is crucial to acquiring inspiration from our worlds. We are interlocked with our environments. With all artistic expressions, changing is all encompassing. This doesn’t mean just changing the self, but in turn changes the world. Great change is done drop by drop, not in grande gestures. Doubt this? Ask water. Water changed the Grande Canyon. Water changes rock and landscape drop by drop or through movement. This isn’t dismissing how weather and water, hurricanes, can change the landscape dramatically, but if we can avoid that harsh change, maybe that is an idea to try.
So many people today are impatient for change, or affect, and with that we have lost the deep commitment and concentration of craftsmanship. Few dedicate their lives to perfecting one craft, or finding their way in life by living through that craft.
We, as soap molders, have the ability to change the face of soap making as an art. Drop by drop, or soap by soap.
I’m all for the slow and steady, even if I don’t see the change in my life time… Really okay with that process. Don’t get me wrong, some days I want a hurricane, but that is generally a temporary internal disposition. It passes. I don’t like the aftermath of clean-up from harsh change, so I choose the drop-by-drop approach.
I’m not the only one who sees the world similarly, Stephen Harrod Buhner, the author of “Ensouling Language: On the Art of Nonfiction and the Writer’s Life” one of the best books I have read about non-fiction. Reading this book also affected my superficial belief about non-fiction (non-fiction had to be dry and how-to like) and motived me to write my two books. In his book on plant intelligence, which is amazingly profound (don’t be mis-led by the title) he has this to say:
Despite our culture’s willful ignorance, deeper perceptual experiences and paradigmatic shifts in cognition are spontaneously emerging with more frequency, and much more strongly, in the human species. For using this different kind of perception and thinking is the way of our predicament, the way to solve the problems that those older kinds of thinking have caused. It is an evolutionary necessity. New thinking is powerful, at one time being able to imagine, think abstractly, was how our first people painted on cave walls.
